Introduction to Engineering

An introduction to engineering – a course for unemployed women
There are many different types of engineers.
This means that there a wide range of different engineering jobs and qualifications.  In many countries female engineers are not unusual, but here in the UK only a small proportion of engineers are women.
There’s no reason why this should be the case, and we want to help women develop their engineering skills.

This course offers women an introduction to the world of engineering, and uses aquaponics to teach engineering principles. Aquaponics is a method of producing food that is well suited to the urban environment.  It produces fish and vegetables without needing soil, or even much space.  Instead, circulating water carries nutrients from fish waste to the roots of plants, helping them grow.  We use aquaponics because all the course tutors are experienced in building and maintaining aquaponic systems, and because most of what you will learn about aquaponic engineering can be applied to many other types of work.  You will learn a range of transferable skills that can be applied to many different tasks.

Aquaponics is a growing industry, but there are very few people with the skills to build commercially viable systems. You don’t have to be interested in aquaponics as a career though; this course will introduce you to all the basic skills of engineering.  It will help you decide what your next steps into engineering could be.  This might mean looking for certain types of jobs, or higher education courses, or even starting a business enterprise in your community.  We can help you make a plan to get into your chosen field.

Doing Urban Agriculture

Picture
Doing Urban Agriculture is a set of training modules produced by Urbanag to provide a comprehensive, basic introduction to urban agriculture for beginners.
The modules consist of an introduction, ‘Land on Your Doorstep – Space in the Urban Environment’, ‘Food Plant Production’, ‘Markets and Outlets’, ‘Project Management’ and ‘Processing Food’. The modules are self-contained but each one leads into the next. They are designed for use by groups seeking to learn about community-based urban agriculture and acquire a good understanding of how to go about starting and running a scheme.
The modules provide the materials for six or seven training sessions (depending on how many sessions you need to cover the module on ‘Food Plant Production’) and should be used in conjunction with practical exercises designed to get groups started on their projects.
